Summer

Man, I suck at this whole blogging thing. I am going to be the first to admit that... especially because I am pretty sure I am the only one reading them as of right now. I actually love it but I get super distracted easily. I actually have a few blog posts just sitting there waiting to be finished, which I will probably be getting too in a few weeks once life slows down again.
Speaking of which, this post was just to fill everyone in on what I have been up to this summer.
I started the summer off by joining a small group at my church that was all about photography. It is lead by a great photographer and videographer who also puts in a lot of time doing media at the church itself. As I have stated many times before, I really want to grow my skill. I thought this was a great way to do that, especially since I have never shot with a group before, and I was not disappointed.
The first day we went over the basics of photography and basics of the camera. I was quite comfortable with the setting but I think that was part of my problem. I had not been experimenting with things and I didn't realise there was more to these setting that I had not been utilising. I think this is a common problem even in life itself. I learned so much in that first day it was great. One of my favourite things was being taught how to do that cool glowy effect that is all the rage right now (do people still say all the rage?) with the sun behind the subject.

It started with photos like this. (Note this is pretty low quality and straight out of camera) With the practice I was able to do under the guidance of our leader I have grown a lot in photographing people. A few weeks at one of our groups I captured this photo.

(More shots from this dance shoot will be up in my portfolio at some point)
Also we got to do some really interesting things because of our leaders connections and again with his support we were able to advance our skills in the artistry of our photos. A lot of time when I was photographing something interesting, I would ignore the artistry of the photo because I thought the subject was enough to make it an interesting photo. In some cases this can be true but it is great to take those opportunities to to turn a cool picture into a interesting piece of work. The coolest shoot we did was just a few weeks into it where we photographed a friend of our leader who juggled and rode a unicycle. First of all, those skills on their own amaze me to no end, but this guy did them together! So our leader gave us ideas to take more interesting photos like slowing down or speeding up our shutter speed to give different effects. My favourite from that shoot has to be this picture below.

Oh wait did I forget to mention he did this with FIRE!! Insane I know. But instead of just taking a direct picture of him with the fire I caught this one of him riding into the sun and was actually able to catch a little rainbow lens flare too.
These are just a few of the photos I have done this summer and a few of the learning experiences. I have gained so much knowledge this summer it is incredible. It takes a lot for me to get out of my comfort zone but I am glad I did. Not only do I now have new skills but I now know some pretty cool people in the industry! I think it is important to remember to never stop learning and to always push yourself to a new best!!
Thanks for reading! I will have more photos from this summer and these shoots uploaded into my portfolio shortly. :) I have also been doing another photography project all summer but I will write about that in my next post... hopefully lol
